John Latini approaches songwriting in many different ways – sometimes serious, sometimes silly, sometimes he begins with music, other times with lyrics – but his emphasis is always on the story. Through a series of group discussions, exercises, demonstrations and 1 on 1 interactions, John encourages his students to explore their perspectives on the topic of their choice. With his upbeat personality, John creates a comfortable environment for sharing song ideas and songwriting concepts, and his interest in the process is evident in his presentations. His positive style is very interactive and his energy is completely infectious. Throughout the program, his passion and enthusiasm keep everyone engaged.
Discussions will focus on the basic components of a song, brainstorming, editing and performance. Exercises include storyboarding, free styling and “Open Mic” performances. The students are taught to brainstorm both individually and in a group. The overall experience teaches group dynamics, time management, issue resolution, and negotiation – all valuable leadership skills they will use throughout their lives – all while pursuing their interests and exploring their creativity.
