With a voice likened to Jeff Buckley and technique that is the guitarist’s envy, Elden Kelly has captivated audiences across the country with his virtuosic songwriting. Influenced by such diverse genres as jazz, neoclassicism, American Roots, Hindustani and Turkish music, Kelly proves impossible to pigeonhole.
Originally from Vermont, Kelly graduated from Boston’s prestigious New England Conservatory of Music with a degree in Contemporary Improvisation. In 2008, Elden accepted a full scholarship and teaching assistantship at Michigan State with Rodney Whitaker, earning a graduate degree in Ethnomusicology in 2011.
In addition to performing, Kelly is also an active educator. While living in Boston, Elden served as teaching assistant at New England Conservatory for theory and keyboard-harmony classes, and also as guitar faculty at the Allegro Music School. He directed a week-long guitar educational program, “Guitar Intensive,” in Richmond, VT, which was sponsored by the Huntington Valley Arts organization. He currently teaches guitar and leads group workshops at Elderly Instruments in Lansing, MI.
Recently he has performed at the Dogwood Center for the Arts, the Jammie Awards, the Toldeo Zen Center, Lansing Jazz Festival, Discover Jazz Festival, Michigan Sacred Music Festival, Northampton Center for the Arts, Jordan Hall, Riverside Arts Center, Kerrytown Concert House, and the Ten Pound Fiddle Series among many others.
